Managing the Rural Historic Environment
The Historic Environment Countryside Section of the
Archaeology Service provides advice on the management and
conservation of the rural historic environment. On a daily
basis this includes advice for landowners and farmers
on Environmental Stewardship applications, English Woodland
Grant Schemes, orchard plantations and hedgerow removals.
Consultation
with the Historic Environment and Archaeology Service is a
mandatory requirement of an Higher Level Stewardship (HLS)
application and Energy Crop Scheme application. However, if you are
considering Entry Level Stewardship (ELS) or an English
Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS) there is no specific requirement to
consult with us. Nonetheless we would welcome your enquiry and
offer a comprehensive advisory service to assist with historic
environment conservation.
For further information about Environmental Stewardship and
other grant schemes available to farmers and landowners, download
our Farming and Archaeology
leaflet

Natural England's website.
The Section is also involved in a number of projects to manage
and promote the rural historic environment:
