Worcestershire Heritage Services
Evidence of the past is all around us – historic buildings,
archaeological sites, ancient monuments and historic
landscapes. It is the task of the Worcestershire
Historic Environment and Archaeology Service
(WHEAS) to
protect, interpret and manage this historic environment. WHEAS also
has a specialist team who provide advice on planning, countryside
and farming issues.
We are responsible for looking after and updating the Historic
Environment Record (HER) which is a computer database of currently
over 21,000 records on the all known archaeological sites in the
County. These can range from a single piece of prehistoric
flint or a collection of pottery, through to a massive
archaeological site such as an Iron Age hillfort or a castle.
The HER team provide information and searches for commercial
archaeological units, academic researchers, students and local
people with an interest in their heritage. The HER also holds
a comprehensive archaeological library with a large local section
plus a collection of aerial photographs and copies of historic
maps.
The WHEAS Field Section has specialists in excavation, building
recording, finds analysis, environmental remains, illustration and
design, and undertake a huge number of excavations and surveys
throughout the County and beyond.
The Service also offers a range of Outreach and Educational
walks, talks, dayschools,.seminars, workshops, school visits and
activities.
