Special Educational Needs (SEN)

These pages hold information on all aspects of SEN Services’ work. The information is in the process of being updated and re-written, to reflect the new structure and working practices within Children’s Services.

Who are SEN?

SEN Services carry out the statutory elements of the SEN process in line with the SEN Code of Practice, which involves:

  • Co-ordination and management of statutory assessments of children's special educational needs, and writing of statements of SEN
  • Representing the LA at SEN and Disability Tribunals
  • Monitoring of provision for children with statements of SEN in maintained schools and within the independent and non-maintained sectors.
  • Monitoring of provision for "Out-county" children with statements of SEN in maintained schools and within the independent and non-maintained sectors.

Another aspect of the team's work is the management and development of special educational needs provision through involvement in:

  • Admissions to special schools, units and mainstream schools for children with SEN.
  • Liaison with Worcestershire Health Authority, Trusts, Social Care and the voluntary sector.

Priorities 5 and 8 of Worcestershire's Children and Young People's Plan for 2008 – 2011 are all about young people achieving their potential :

  • Priority 5 : Raise the achievement of all children and young people
  • Priority 8: Ensure that all young people are able to access appropriate education, employment and training opportunities and make progress

Worcestershire has a range of services dedicated to achieving these and is committed to providing positive outcomes for all its children, including those with Additional Needs. The Additional Needs Service offers support through two strands:
