What is the Trading Standards Service?

We are responsible for enforcing legislation that covers the safety of products for the consumer market, weights and measures, fair trading and food.

We are also involved in maintaining standards of animal welfare for livestock and for enforcing measures to prevent the spread of animal disease in farm animals. If you are a consumer, we can advise you how to go about dealing with a complaint for yourself and how to take a small claim in the County Court.

If you are a business, we can give advice and information to help ensure you comply with consumer legislation. We are also able to check on weighing and measuring equipment and offer a weight adjustment service.
