Whittington Roundabout Improvement Scheme
Whittington Roundabout Improvement Scheme
Update
Construction contractor Alun Griffiths has
been appointed on behalf of Worcestershire County Council to carry
out highways improvement works on Whittington Roundabout in
Worcester.
Vegetation removal has already started in
readiness for the scheme to take place and clearance steps up a
gear today as Alun Griffiths continue to make the area ready for
the first stages of work to begin in two weeks' time (Monday, March
12).
Traffic management is scheduled to be set up
on Sunday, March 11, ready for the carriageway works to start
Monday, 12 March.
As is to be expected with major carriageway
works, it is anticipated that there will be some delays to traffic
during the construction period. Traffic management will be in place
to ensure things run as smoothly as possible and drivers are
thanked for their patience.
The traffic management will include the
temporary closure of the lay-by, a temporary 30mph speed limit with
narrowed lanes approaching the roundabout. This is designed to
minimise traffic disruption whilst allowing the workforce to safely
construct the improvements.
Works are estimated for completion during the
school summer holidays.
Worcestershire County Council Head of
Integrated Transport Peter Blake said: "Whittington
Roundabout is a key gateway to Worcester and improvements are
necessary to keep the city's traffic moving as freely as possible.
Whilst delays are likely whilst works are underway, drivers will
benefit from real improvements to journey times once the
enhancements are completed in summer".
As a key part of the highway infrastructure in
Worcester, Whittington roundabout suffers from traffic congestion,
particularly in the morning and afternoon peaks.
An improvement scheme for Whittington
roundabout has been agreed as a strategic priority of the County
Council and is being progressed with the key objective to alleviate
congestion.
The works forms the first phase of a series of
improvements to key junctions along the Southern Link Road.
