Cotswold Line - July and August 2009 service changes

Network Rail is well into its preparations to restore the single line between Charlbury and Evesham to double track, which is designed to ease congestion and improve the reliability of services for people travelling on the route.

While the long term benefits of this project are clear, it will mean some disruption to regular services this summer as line closures take place that are essential to get the work done.

The first phase of improvement work will happen over six weeks during the school summer holiday, when traditionally fewer people travel. During this time the following sections of the railway line will be closed:

18 July – 3 August 2009              Oxford – Worcester
3 August – 24 August 2009         Moreton – Evesham
24 August – 1 September 2009   Oxford – Worcester

Rail services will be running normally wherever possible, but where this is not possible alternative transport – normally coaches – will be provided to make sure your journey runs as smoothly as possible. Details of alternative transport arrangements will be available on First Great Western's website at www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/northcotswolds and in a booklet.

Peak time rail services from Great Malvern, Malvern Link and Worcester stations to London will continue to operate via Cheltenham Spa during this period with only minor journey time changes. Throughout the engineering works period passengers holding First Great Western tickets can travel from Worcestershire to London via Cheltenham Spa or Bristol Parkway.

If you are using rail replacement transport please be aware that coaches will only be able to carry assistance dogs, and folding bikes, folding pushchairs and folding prams. Customers with mobility problems who require additional assistance should contact the Assisted Travel helpline on free phone 0800 197 1329 at least 24 hours before making your journey. The calls are free and the line is open from 8am to 8pm daily. Suitable transport will be arranged for customers in wheelchairs.

Rail services on other lines to London will continue to operate as normal. Alternatives include:

  • Kidderminster – five trains per day to London Marylebone
  • Birmingham New Street / Birmingham International – three trains per hour to London Euston
  • Cheltenham Spa – direct service every two hours to London Paddington
  • Warwick Parkway – two trains per hour to London Marylebone

Full details of all rail services including coach replacement services can be found on the National Rail Enquiries website: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk
