Our world is changing faster than at any time in human history, threatening the quality of life for present and future generations and the very existence of many other living things on the planet. |
In response to these challenges the international community has adopted the concept of sustainable development. In essence, what this comes down to is care: care for ourselves, care for each other, care for the planet and care for future generations. The complex nature of the situation necessitates investigation, “linking thinking” and urgent action.
‘Our biggest challenge in this new century is to take an idea that seems abstract – sustainable development – and turn it into a reality for all the world’s people.’
Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the UN, 2001
At Worcestershire County Council we believe that Education for Sustainable development (ESD) is vital in our work towards a sustainable future.
Education for Sustainable Development enables people to develop the knowledge, values and skills to participate in decisions about the way we do things individually and collectively, both locally and globally that will improve the quality of life now, without damaging the planet for the future.
The English National Curriculum, QCA 1999
Our Aim:
To use the resources and expertise available within the County Council, and, through partnership, to help people have access to the resources they need to make informed decisions about sustainability and to encourage them to actively move towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
