What is the Switch It Off Campaign? |
The campaign aimed to encourage people to switch off unused lights and electrical appliances and not leave items on standby. This is a week long campain culminating in the Big Switch Off on the Friday evening, when electricity use normally peaks. The campaign covers Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Coventry and usually takes place in autumn. |
Was it a success? |
Yes! Figures released by Central Networks, who monitored energy usage throughout the campaign, have revealed the 2008 campaign achieved a drop in electrcity use by 98 Mega Watt (MW) across Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Coventry During the 2007 campaign there was a 22 Mega Watt (MW) drop in Worcestershire on the Friday evening, compared to the previous evening. Overall there was a decrease of 74MW across the whole Switch It Off region- 8MW more than last year and equivalent to 15,416 typical three-bed detached houses turning off all their power for one year. During Switch it Off week in 2006, Worcestershire achieved a 4% energy reduction during the big switch off compared with the previous day. |
