Hallow Road Landfill Site is located in the alluvial plain of the River Severn. It was operated by Worcestershire County Council between 1963 and 1985 at which time it was completed, closed and restored to a grassed field.
The total waste volume is approximately 1,638,000 m3 which over the whole site area of 23.4 hectares amounts to an average depth of 7 metres. It has a restoration layer of 1.5 metres that was made up of alluvial clays that were extracted from its base prior to filling. The site was completed in three stages or phases.
Externally there are twenty two points that are used to take gas readings and groundwater levels round the site. Groundwater samples are taken every three months from dedicated sampling points.
Every month surface water samples are taken to ensure that there are no pollutants leaking into the surrounding water bodies.
Recently the site has been prone to flooding when the River Severn breaks its banks. This effects the lower Eastern boundary of the site only and extra monitors have been installed in the flood plain to monitor any potentially polluting episodes.
Monitors installed between the site and local houses consistently show extremely low levels of carbon dioxide. and no methane.
