Hoo quarry is an old landfill that was filled between 1974 - 1980. It was originally quarried for the sand and gravel deposits. and accepted residue from the old Hoobrook incinerator. The site is a dilute and disperse site.
It has an area of 1.26 hectares that was filled with 44,100m3 of waste. The maximum depth of the waste is around 8.5 metres.
The site has 6 external and 2 internal monitors. It was restored using a mixed subsoil between 1 and 2 metres in depth.
Due to both the age of the waste and its inert nature, gas levels on the site are consistently low. During the monthly monitoring programme no leachate is detected.
The site is home to an array of wildlife including hares and foxes.
