Our first event in the new year took us to Kidderminster Library, where we displayed the archaeology of the county's river valleys, as revealed through our work with the region's quarry companies. The town of Kidderminster lies near the course of the River Stour (a tributary of the River Severn) and late prehistoric and Roman communities settled on fertile terraces in near proximity to the area's modern day urban developments.
Three such sites were featured in the displays. The first at Larford Farm, near Stourport, where family groups once lived in a farmstead settlement from the Iron age, through to the Roman period. The second, featured display proved popular at our Top Barn Farm day last September, which lies close to the Bronze Age burial site of Holt. It illustrated details of excavations from the 1970s which revealed a group of burial ditches and cremations. The third site, at Trimpley, consisted of an intriguing collection of mesolithic flint tools.
For more details of the content of these and future displays do browse on the e-gallery pages.
The event, in the spacious, well-lit foyer of the library, attracted a broad range of visitors, including good numbers of people who had not consciously sought out the exhibition, and the day also attracted local people, who brought finds of their own to be identified, including a copper bowl from the Far East! We had an exciting press release in the Kidderminster Express and Star (do look up the edition for Tuesday 16th January) where two keen youngsters were photographed with a complete Bronze Age cremation urn.
Worcestershire Historic Environment and Archaeology Service extends its gratitude to all the staff at Kidderminster Library for their gracious hospitality.
