The Severn Way Partnership was established in the mid-1990s in order to develop and then manage the route. It originally comprised the NRA (now the Environment Agency) and the 6 highway authorities along the route - Powys, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, South- Gloucestershire and Bristol.
More recently however, the town and district councils along the route have become actively involved with the Partnership, particularly in the development and implementation of the route marketing plan. In addition, supporting organsiations including the Forestry Commission and British Waterways have played an important role in the development of the route.
