Landscape Character

Worcestershire has a varied and attractive landscape as a result of a combination of agricultural uses, buildings, wildlife and local traditions as well as underlying landform.

In recent years the importance of safeguarding the landscape as a whole rather than just selected parts of it has become increasingly recognised. Landscape character is a reflection of the particular physical structure, including topography, geology and soils, and the cultural patterns of landuse and settlement which have developed over time.

A Landscape Character Assessment of Worcestershire has been undertaken in recent years which provides:

  • An understanding and appreciation of the landscape
  • Indicates the diversity and spatial patterns of landscape character
  • Identifies the components that provide the landscape character of different areas

It can also determine such aspects as the relative significance of features within the landscape, the vulnerability of landscapes to change, the tolerance or ease of replacement of landscape features, the relevance of visibility of different landscapes and overall landscape sensitivity.
