The Limestone Trail at Fish Hill Picnic Place

The path starts by climbing gently up to the top of the grassy slope, past the topograph and through a scrubby section of brambles, nettles, Fox Gloves and Teasel which is good for birds and butterflies. It then winds in amongst the trees, leading you further into the provocative woods.

Linger a while, breathing in the delicious aroma of the Wild Garlic in spring, or damp earthy smell after summer rain. Try to imagine a thousand insects living in a single tree. Notice the patterns of the branches and roots. Feel the texture of the leaves and bark, and each tree takes on a soul of its own.

The old London Road is still distinguishable from the other paths in the woods. Compare this to the busy A44 that you pass close to at the bottom of the wood. It would have been busy with horses' hooves clattering on loose stones and the breath puffing as they pulled their carriages up this steep hill. The mammals you're more likely to see here now are Hedgehogs, squirrels, mice and a few deer passing through.

Eventually the path wiggles back out of the woods, via a few steps and suddenly you are back in real time, among the scrub that leads back to the topograph and the rest of the picnic area.
