Surplus Places Return

Every year the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) asks the local authorities with responsibilities for education provision to provide a variety of data to enable Government to predict funding requirements from central government in future years.   The report returned by each local authority is called the “Supply of School Places" return although the information requirements also include forecasting future numbers on roll.   

The Supply of school Places return informs the Department of the extent of spare capacity in different parts of the country.  It helps DCSF monitor whether local authorities are taking action to reduce it.  Schools with more than 30 and more than 25% surplus places are identified and the Authority has to report what measures are being taken to reduce the level in each school named.

DCSF uses the projections of pupil numbers to calculate how much Basic Need funding local education authorities should receive.
