What is a connect2 Worcester

Connect2 Worcester is a project to provide a walk-cycle bridge over the River Severn at Diglis Island, and to develop walking and cycling routes in this area of the city including the riverside.  The Diglis Bridge will transform Diglis Island into a public space where everyone can enjoy the river from a new perspective.

Connect2 Worcester forms part of the national Sustrans Connect2 project to improve local travel in 79 communities across the UK by creating new walking and cycling routes. Watch the Sustrans Connect2 video!

The Sustrans Connect2 project was one of four projects competing for a single £50m award from the Big Lottery Fund's 'Living Landmarks: The People's Millions.' Sustrans Connect2 was announced as the winning project on the ITV1 lunchtime news on Wednesday, 12 December 2007. Worcester Connect2 has been awarded £850k of the £50m funding. Our bridge along with 78 other Connect2 projects was up against the Eden Project, Sherwood Forest and the Black Country Urban Park.

In addition to the £850K awarded from Sustrans, Worcestershire County Council will be spending a further £1.5m for the construction of the bridge and putting £450k towards the connecting walk-cycle links. This money has come from Central Government and is ring fenced for transport infrastructure. Worcester City Council will contribute an additional £1m which will be spent on developing the riverfront between the New Road Bridge and Diglis Island.

About the bridge

The Diglis Bridge will be positioned on or near to the Diglis Island and the supporting walk-cycle links will provide vital links for Worcester, Malvern and Powick residents. The bridge will connect Powick and Lower Wick with the city centre, using route 46 of the National Cycle Network and will also significantly enhance links between St Johns and Cherry Orchard, Red Hill and St Peters.

Next steps

The Diglis Bridge will need to go through a consultation process that includes planning permission and detailed design stages before any construction takes place. Current focus is concentrating on the suitability of the location and type of bridge for the available budget and assessing potential links that will connect Worcester residents throughout the city. Keep an eye on this website for details!
