St John’s Library Refurbishment

In conjunction with Big Lottery Fund Community Libraries Programme

Thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund Worcestershire County Council’s Library and Learning Service can make changes to the current building to suit the needs of the local community.

St John’s Library heard that its grant application had been successful in September 2007, and the library has been awarded £1.4million.

Temporary Library

St John's Library is operating from a temporary home in the former school premises situated directly behind the current library building. This has enabled the library to continue providing a full service to the local community.

The main aims of the refurbishment are that:

1. The local community will become actively engaged in the development of library services
   
   
2. The library will become a centre for learning - a place where people will have the opportunity to improve their skills and abilities, or just learn for fun
   
   
3. The library will develop a range of activities and opportunities specifically for older people
   
   
4. The library will develop and improve services and facilities for families and children, and young people
   
   
5. Encourage people to become 'community champions' for the library and its services
   
   

This represents a great opportunity for the library and the community to work together to create something special – a library space that is open to all, with

• Newly designed areas for children and young people
• Purpose built meeting rooms and exhibition area
• Enhanced IT facilities

Kathy Kirk, Strategic Libraries and Learning Manager, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to develop the library as a space for the local people of St John’s and the surrounding area.

“With this money we can make a real difference to the existing building, to make more room for activities in and around the library and we really do want to work with the local community right from the start.”
