Disposing of Domestic Kitchen Waste

note: This information applies to kitchen waste in the domestic home. Strict rules apply to disposal of food waste from businesses, butchers, cafes, restaurants, canteens etc - please contact the Environment Agency for more details.

As more and more waste collection authorities switch to fortnightly rubbish collections, people have raised concerns over food waste left for upto 14 days in domestic bins or bags. As an alternative to throwing your waste food away, consider the following options:

  • You can put uncooked fruit and vegetable peelings on a compost heap or in a wormery.
  • You can put small amounts of cooked waste food in a wormery
  • You can put cooked and uncooked waste food in a garden digester
  • If you do not have the facilities or space for a composter, wormery or digester, you can install an under-sink kitchen waste disposal unit that will help to dispose of kitchen food waste in a safe, hygenic and efficient manner.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire councils are running a rebate scheme to promote the use of kitchen waste disposal units. More details can be found on the www.wastemissionimpossible.org.uk website.
