Madeley Heath landfill was originally used as a borrowpit for the M5 construction. This was pre 1974 and completed in 1992. It accepted domestic and non-hazardous commercial wastes which amounted to 684,000m3. The landfill covers an area of 5.7 hectares and the waste has a maximum depth of 19 metres with an average of 12 metres.
The site has no engineered liner and is a dilute and disperse landfill. It has ten internal monitoring points that were constructed in 1990 along with four external sampling points. In 1991 another 2 monitoring points were added followed by a further 40 that made two trenches that are linked into a passive gas venting system.
Due to the age of the waste within the site contamination is minimal and thus the site is used for grazing.
