June 2002.
The site was originally quarried for sand and gravel in the 1970's and was filled between 1981 and 1988 with household waste. It took a volume of 1,152,750m3 over an area of 15.37 hectares. The average depth of the waste is 7.50 metres with a maximum of 12 metres and a minimum of 3 metres.
The site has an active gas control system that consists of eleven internal wells connected to a 500m3/hr candle flare stack that burns off the gas. (See above picture). This ensures that the landfill gas is flared off and burnt in a controlled manner and reduces the risk of off-site migration. Externally there are 21 monitors that are monitored weekly for landfill gas, these are around the site and in adjoining fields.
The site at present is home to a whole host of wildlife, from wild meadow flowers to pairs of lapwings.
